Celebration - Refill and Reuse/Field Day

Refill and Reuse Celebration!  2018 was the beginning of Pemberton's green transition. We have a large student population with grades beginning with Prek3 students up to 5th grade.  Our green committee met and established practices we wanted to have our school embrace. We began incorporating activities school wide in baby steps that would allow us to meet our goals.  At the end of the year we celebrated by giving every student in the school (577 students) a refillable Pemberton water bottle to refill for our field day activities.  Refill and Reuse was our theme to encourage students to refill their water bottles to help cut down on the use of disposable plastic water bottles. Students were encouraged to bring their water bottles to school everyday to reuse rather than bringing plastic disposable water bottles.
2018 Every student in the school was given a reusable Pemberton water bottle. Photos below show our Prek4 students using their water bottles on field day.

On Field Day 2019 in order to celebrate Pemberton's start of our Green School Process, all 583 students in our school during that time were provided with refillable water bottles to cut down on the use of plastic bottles. Students were encouraged to use these refillable water bottles through the end of the school year rather than bringing plastic water bottles to school.   September of 2019, the Pemberton water bottles were put in the school store and throughout the school year students were encouraged to bring their refillable Pemberton water bottle to school rather than disposable water bottles.

Our Reuse and Refill practice from our 2018/2019 Green Celebration continues for the 2019/2020 school year, with our Pemberton water bottles being reused daily for water consumption rather than store bought plastic bottles.

Read Across America Green Celebration - Celebrating A Nation of Diverse Readers, Let's Keep it clean was the theme for this school wide celebration!   Our green committee organized a school wide reading celebration for Read Across America.  Every classroom in the school had a guest reader come to their classroom and read a story.  In most rooms, the Lorax was read and discussed to promote recycling and protection of forests.   Books about recycling and reducing waste were also out for guest readers to select to read to their designated classrooms.  Dr. Seuss books were available for the event, but the guests were encouraged to choose from the environmental located on the sign in table.  Many of the guest readers contacted the committee prior to coming and were assigned the Lorax as the book to read to the class they were visiting.  Recycled bags with birdseed inside were given to guest readers as a thank you for visiting our school.  Throughout the day we had a total of 35 guest readers from the community and Board of Education Central Office.  Feb. 2020, 577 students involved.

January 2020, the bulletin board was completed by 4th and 5th grade students on our green team after school club under the guidance of our green school committee leaders - 10 students involved on this project with help from a community volunteer Beth Danz, and our art teacher who created the Lorax for the board.
