Practice 2.2 Conservation Of Energy
Picture
Turn Off Lights, Please - January 2020-  After a science unit on light, students in grades one and two  discussed the importance of conserving energy. Classroom jobs were created to designate a student in each classroom who would have the responsibility of turning off the lights and SMART boards when leaving the room.  All students in both grades created energy conservation posters and turn off light reminder signs for the entire school.  The "turn off lights please" signs were distributed to all classrooms in our building to be displayed by the light switch.  As a follow up activity for this unit we have an assembly scheduled with Thomas Tyndall from the Choptank Electric Cooperative for all of our first and second grade students.

Our First Power Down Friday - January 2020 / 577-students involved
After light and energy lessons, our second grade students brainstormed an idea to have Power Down Fridays.    The goal of our Power Down Fridays is to unplug all small appliances before students and staff leave the building for the weekend.  Students in our four second grade classes were also selected to be Power Rangers who go around at the end of the day every Friday to remind everyone in the building to power down.  There is also one Power Ranger from each class chosen to remind the teacher and students in their classroom to turn off lights, document cameras and projectors when leaving the classroom throughout the day.   January 2020 / 81 second grade students involved.  When we held our first Power Down weekend it was impressive to see staff powered down by 3:00 pm using natural light to finish up plans before leaving the building.  The pictures below show two of our staff members working in “natural light” finishing up their plans prior to leaving on Friday.  Teachers were rewarded with small treats for powering down on our first "Power Down" weekend, which were delivered by our Power Ranger students.

Students from our 4th grade Green Team recycling club, went to our second grade classes throughout the week of January 13th, with a rolling bulletin board they created to teach our second grade students about Pemberton’s “green” practices. These students went into each second grade classroom with the bulletin board and did a 10 minute presentation.  The bulletin board has "Green New Year's Resolutions written by the students and stapled to the boarder of the board.  January 2020 (20 to 40 students involved in writing the "Green Resolutions" .
