Youth Environmental Action Summit
10 fourth and fifth grade students were invited to attended the Youth Environmental Action Summit at the Ward Museum. The students chose two presentations to attend. We learned about Ocean City’s strawless summer campaign, led by the Surfrider Association. They toured the wildfowl exhibits and learned about the art of wood duck carving. Students then went outside and created seed bombs and planted seeds in pots to be planted in the spring. The keynote speakers were phenomenal! Students heard from a senator from Baltimore City who has rallied for a plastic bag ban, which recently got passed, and then an 11 year old from Pennsylvania who has a passion for pollinators and created “info-tainment” to educate others about the importance of pollinators for healthy food. Finally, the students made bags out of old t-shirts, wrote green goals on a recycled parachute, and heard about other students’ projects. March 2020/ 10 students involved

Salisbury Zoo: Title I Family Nights at the Zoo
October 2017-2018 and October 2018-2019 - Our Title I staff, Amy Prettyman and Janine Lichtenberger, organized Zoo Family Fun nights for our Title I families. These evenings promoted science and our Green practices. Students learned the importance of keeping our planet clean to preserve the natural habitat of the animals who live in our zoo. They were also taught how reducing trash and recycling plastics can have a positive impact on the natural habitat of our zoo animals. Additionally, families took part in a scavenger hunt around the zoo to learn information about the animals and the role they play in our ecosystem.

University of Maryland Extension Program - Lynn Matava
Pemberton partners with the University of Maryland Extension Program by providing Nutrition Lessons to students in grades Prek3 through Grade Four. Lessons are taught once a month either by Lynn Matava or with provided materials from the SNAP ED program for teachers to complete with their students. Additionally, the SNAP Ed Program provides Smarter Lunchrooms Programming at Pemberton, which is an evidence-based approach from Cornell University encouraging selection of healthy foods in the school cafeteria, by making simple, low- to no-cost changes in how food is arranged, displayed, and marketed on the service line, students are 'nudged' toward healthy choices. This involves not only training food service staff but school-wide tasting events.
